Here at Monty Anderson Group, we’ve received lots of questions about the Senate’s vote earlier this week to extend the federal homebuyer’s tax credit closing deadline. The amendment was part of a $140 billion tax bill that passed 60-37. It allows first-time homebuyers who were under contract as of April 30 to take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit if they close by September 30.

If approved by the House and signed by the President, a new amendment will extend the homebuyers tax credit closing deadlines.

But it’s not just for first-timers. Repeat buyers also can get a tax rebate of $6,500 if the home they buy is to be their primary residence. The same deadlines apply – You must have been under contract on or before April 30 and you must close by September’s end.

Monty Anderson Group has many clients serving in the Armed Forces. They’ll be glad to know that the amendment extends their deadline an additional year. Military members and certain federal employees serving outside the country have until April 30, 2011 to enter a contract for a primary residence, and June 30, 2011 to settle on the purchase.

Of course, it’s not a done deal until the U.S. House of Representatives approves the plan and President Obama signs off. But pundits say that scenario is highly likely.
